Being lightweight, durable, hygienic and affordable, polystyrene is a great choice for food packaging as it extends the shelf life of food, keeping it fresher and safer. Due to its unique chemical properties, polystyrene is particularly well suited for recycling.
To maximise this intrinsic value so that it is not lost forever, we are converting post-consumer polystyrene waste back via mechanical recycling – a method by which plastic waste is physically processed back into pellets, without changing the basic structure of the material.
High purity mechanical recycling of polystyrene
With know-how from INEOS Styrolution, this method can generate new polymer grades that match virgin polymer performance, with high quality and without any impurities. This method of recycling polystyrene has a comparably high technology maturity, is the quickest available, and has the lowest carbon footprint.
During the next cycles, the material will continue to contribute to lightweight solutions, enjoy a new life as a yoghurt cup or a food tray, and help conserve and extend the life of food once again.
