Sustainability Bites

Our ABS ECO products: Drop-in solutions up. Low-value applications down.

Our Terluran ECO and Novodur ECO product lines represent a breakthrough in sustainable ABS grades by ensuring high-performance with no compromise in product properties. Both these product ranges complement each other and breathe new life into end-of-life products.

RESHAPING THE ABS LANDSCAPE

Through cutting-edge ABS formulations and state-of-the-art recycling processes, our mechanically recycled Terluran ECO and Novodur ECO products are versatile solutions that uphold quality, performance and environmental responsibility.

Collaborating with local recyclers, we're exploring applications in retail, electronics, automotive, household and consumer products, offering drop-in solutions that maintain manufacturers' existing moulding concepts without altering injection components. This energy-efficient recycling method significantly reduces the carbon footprint compared to traditional processes and minimises landfill waste.

Made using post-consumer waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE), Terluran ECO GP-22 MR50 and Terluran ECO GP-22 MR70 contain 50% and 70% recycled material respectively.

On the other hand, Novodur ECO P2H-AT MR, mirrors its fossil-based counterpart in flowability, stiffness, and gloss. Also available with 50% or 70% post-consumer mechanically recycled content and in various colours, including our self-colouring option, it is already being tested by customers for various household appliances.

Within our Novodur High Heat (HH) family, Novodur ECO HH-106 MR30, Novodur ECO H605 MR30, and Novodur ECO H801 MR40 stand out, offering carbon footprint reduction of up to 28% and recycled content of 30% and 40%, respectively. These products also meet the stringent stability requirements for thermally stressed components.

Our RecyClass certification

Our commitment to sustainability extends to certification by RecyClass, an initiative promoting plastic packaging recyclability, and ensuring traceability and transparency of recycled plastic content in Europe. Its certifications are voluntary audit schemes that demonstrate the degree of recyclability of plastic packaging and recycled content of plastics used in products. RecyClass has verified the post-consumer origin of our recycled feedstock and the entire production process of mechanically recycled Terluran ECO at our sites in Antwerp, Belgium, and Schwarzheide, Germany, respectively.

REDUCING OUR CARBON FOOTPRINT THROUGH BIO-ATTRIBUTION

Our Terluran® ECO and Novodur ECO grades are also now being made using renewable feedstock certified under ISCC PLUS.

With Terluran ECO BC60 and BC100, we maximise renewable feedstock while minimising our CO2 footprint, offering significant greenhouse gas emissions savings. Terluran ECO BC60 boasts up to 85% GHG emissions savings through bio-attributed styrene, while Terluran ECO BC100 (currently available in Europe) promises well over 100% GHG emissions savings, leveraging bio-attributed content from all three monomers.

We also offer three Novodur ECO grades - Novodur ECO P2MC BC50, Novodur ECO HD M203FC BC50, and Novodur ECO P2H-AT BC50 - each with a 50% contribution of bio-attributed content, available in various colours and as an NR (natural) option, delivering PCF savings of up to 71%.

Novodur ECO P2MC B50, tailored for electroplating, serves various sanitary and automotive appliances, while Novodur ECO HD M203 FC BC50 meets stringent regulatory standards for medical applications in the healthcare industry. Both are available in natural colours. Additionally, Novodur ECO P2H-AT BC50, designed for high-quality surfaces in household and electronics industries, offers diverse colour options and self-colouring capabilities.

Co-injection moulding offering design and colour choice

We have developed a sustainable solution for our customers based on co-injection technology that performs like a 100% fossil-based solution from a material product property perspective. Along with our development partner Neue Materialien Bayreuth and injection moulding machine producer ENGEL, we have proven that this technology supports co-injection of 100% r-ABS with our Novodur product family. We tested the so-called sandwich technology and the newly developed skin-melt technology from ENGEL. Both technologies allow our customers to include up to 50% r-ABS in the core and our Novodur range of products for the outside “skin”.

This gives our customers safe products with more freedom of design and usage of different colours. Also, the use of a single material (recycled ABS on the inside and, fossil-based ABS on the outside) allows for the product to be recycled. We see this as a solution with particularly strong potential in the household and electronics segments.

Both Terluran ECO and Novodur ECO are available as recycled and bio-attributed options in Americas, Asia-Pacific and Europe.  And we are continuously developing new ABS grades, new technologies and exploring new feedstock sources.
